Are you planning to celebrate with fireworks this Canada Day long weekend? Since 2017, the use of fireworks within the Forest Protection Area (FPA) has been prohibited without written permission from a Forest Officer or County Fire Guardian.

Fireworks create hot debris when they are detonated and can cause unintentional wildfires when this debris comes into contact with fuels in the forest, such as dry grass. To request permission, please contact Bill Lesiuk, Fire Prevention Officer at Big Lakes County at least THREE days before the long weekend.

If you do not have written permission, you could face a fine of $600 and if you are found responsible for starting a wildfire, you could also be charged with the cost of firefighting. For more information visit wildfire.alberta.ca
