On September 12, 2017, Big Lakes County received the ‘Economic Developers Association of Canada (EDAC) Best Publication Award’ for its Sector Profiles, during the Annual Conference in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Each year, recipients across the country are recognized by the EDAC for excellence in promoting their communities and furthering their economic development priorities.
The awards are given out to municipalities based on their economic development budget. Municipalities with a budget of under $200,000 are placed into level one, level two have a budget between $200,000 and $600,000, and over $600,000 are placed into level three. This year, Big Lakes County’s Economic Development budget is $235,000.
The EDAC awards are some of the most competitive and prestigious that a municipality can receive. Other municipalities that received awards alongside Big Lakes County in the level two category were The County of Grande Prairie, St. Catherine’s, and Kitchener-Waterloo. These communities have populations 10 to 30 times larger than Big Lakes County. This is an outstanding accomplishment for the municipality, putting Big Lakes County on the map and in the same category as much larger communities.
Big Lakes County’s Sector Profiles feature local companies and present compelling data for investors and entrepreneurs to make decisions about their investments in Big Lakes County in forestry, agriculture, tourism, and energy. Judges remarked that the profiles were consistent, useful, and used design and colour coding to present the information well. Big Lakes County plans to complete more sector profiles in 2018.
