Wildfire season officially begins on Saturday, March 1st!
We encourage you to revisit any winter burning sites and ensure all fires are fully extinguished. If any fires remain active and cannot be safely extinguished by March 1st, please obtain a fire permit by visiting Fire Permits – Big Lakes County or contact the County Fire Guardian at 780-507-9848. If the burn location falls outside the County’s area of responsibility (the Forest Protection Area) contact Alberta Wildfire at 780-523-6619.
When revisiting your winter burn site, you should:
- Spread the remaining ashes and debris.
- Check the ground for any hotspots with your bare hands and feel deep below the surface for any lingering ground fire.
- Douse the area to fully extinguish the burn and stir up ashes with heavy equipment or hand tools.
- Ensure the area is cold to the touch – only then is the fire fully out.
Stay safe and help prevent wildfires this season!
