As summer temperatures rise, more residents and visitors are enjoying the rivers and waterways throughout Big Lakes County. Before swimming, wading, or jumping into a river, always take a moment to assess the conditions.
River levels and depths can change quickly due to rainfall, debris, dam releases, and shifting riverbeds. Never assume the water is deep enough for diving or jumping. Hidden rocks, submerged logs, shallow water, and strong currents can lead to serious injury or even death.
Stay safe by:
• Checking water conditions before entering
• Avoiding diving or jumping into unfamiliar waters
• Keeping a safe distance from high or unstable riverbanks
• Supervising children at all times around water
• Wearing a life jacket when appropriate
• Keeping a close eye on pets near fast-moving water
Throughout July, Big Lakes County Fire Services will be sharing river safety tips through our monthly prevention videos to help keep our communities safe. Stay alert. Stay safe. Enjoy the water responsibly.
