Ice Safety Minute

It’s Captain James Doyle with Big Lakes County Fire Services, here to share a few important ice safety tips as you head out this winter:

1. Never go out on the lake alone. Always bring a buddy and let someone know where you’re going and when you plan to be back.

2. Check ice thickness before heading out. Ice should be at least 3-4 inches thick for walking or ice fishing, and even thicker for snowmobiles or ATVs. Remember: ice thickness can vary from spot to spot.

3. Wear proper safety gear. Ice cleats, a life jacket or float suit, and ice picks can save your life if the ice gives way.

4. Avoid areas with moving water. Inlets, outlets, pressure cracks, and areas near docks or vegetation can have weaker ice.

5. Watch the weather. Warm temperatures, rain, and wind can quickly weaken ice conditions.

6. Trust your instincts. If the ice looks unsafe or you’re unsure, don’t risk it—turn back.

Your safety is our top priority. Enjoy the winter season but always put safety first when heading out on the ice!
