Description:

Big Lakes County utilized nearly $250,000 of our Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) allocation through the Alberta Government to renovate the Gilwood Transfer Station located N.W. 24-74-18-W5M. The completely redesigned transfer station will enhance operational efficiencies by reducing overall transportation costs, air emissions, energy use, truck traffic, and road wear and tear. Subsequently, saving ratepayers from Big Lakes County and the Town of High Prairie money.

“Big Lakes County is excited to be able to partner with the Town of High Prairie in manning a site for our residents at 50/50 cost-sharing for operations. We have designed the site to ensure the public’s health, safety, and welfare of the community and environment are the top priorities,” states Big Lakes County Reeve, Richard Simard.

“We are pleased to have provided funding from the Municipal Sustainability Initiative for the Gilwood Transfer Station,” says Kaycee Madu, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “By working together, Big Lakes County and High Prairie are improving critical services for residents and contributing to their health and wellbeing.”

From October 12th to 15th, the waste transfer station will be open 24 hours for residents who need to access the waste bins. From October 15th to 22nd, the site will be manned from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. On October 23rd, the transfer station will transition to our winter hours and will be open on Wednesdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and closed on Christmas Day. During the summer months, April 1st to September 30th, hours are extended to 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

All transfer stations in Big Lakes County accept household waste, household hazardous waste, tires, batteries, used oil (under 10 liters), scrap metal, white metal, burnable, and e-waste. The Gillwood Transfer Station does not accept hot ashes, burning refuse, auto bodies, construction waste, sludge, explosives, dead animals or fish waste, liquids, and hazardous waste. Waste is not accepted from commercial, institutional, or non-partners.

Big Lakes County will also utilize an additional nearly $250,000 from the Alberta Governments MSI to renovate the Enilda Transfer Station. The project is scheduled to begin Spring of 2020.
