Big Lakes County is pleased to announce the arrival of a new rescue boat, now stationed at the Joussard Fire Hall. The rescue boat will strengthen the County’s emergency response capabilities by allowing Big Lakes County Fire Services to respond to water emergencies, support search and rescue operations, and enhance public education and prevention activities on many of the accessible lakes throughout the County.
“Big Lakes County is home to some of Alberta’s most beautiful lakes, which attract residents and visitors year-round,” said Big Lakes County Reeve Tyler Airth. “Investing in specialized equipment like this rescue boat helps ensure our firefighters have the resources they need to respond safely and effectively, while continuing to protect the people who live, work, and visit our communities.”
Manufactured by NewStar Marine in Nova Scotia, the new Galaxy P6.5 is a 21-foot rescue boat powered by a 175-horsepower Suzuki outboard motor. The boat was delivered to the Joussard Fire Hall in July, where members of Big Lakes County Fire Services participated in several days of hands-on training with NewStar Marine to become familiar with the boat’s advanced equipment and operational features.
The rescue boat is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including a FLIR thermal imaging (night vision) camera system, multiple sonar arrays, and a Garmin navigation system, providing firefighters with the tools needed to conduct safe and effective water rescue operations in a variety of conditions.
“This investment significantly enhances our ability to respond quickly and effectively to emergencies on the water,” said Big Lakes County Fire Chief Jason Cottingham. “With the number of recreational lakes throughout Big Lakes County, having a dedicated water rescue boat means we can provide timely assistance when it matters most. This boat will serve our County for many years to come.”
