Big Lakes County is pleased to announce the introduction of a new Junior Firefighter Scholarship aimed at supporting the recruitment, retention, and development of junior firefighters within Big Lakes County Fire Services, while also encouraging continued education beyond high school.
The scholarship recognizes the commitment and dedication of Junior Firefighters who actively contribute to their local fire service and community. Eligible participants may earn $750 per Service Year, with up to four (4) Service Years recognized, for a maximum scholarship value of $3,000.
“Junior Firefighters play an important role in our communities, showing leadership, commitment, and a strong sense of service at a young age,” said Big Lakes County Reeve Tyler Airth. “This scholarship is our way of recognizing that dedication and investing in their future. We want to support them not only as volunteers today, but as the leaders and firefighters of tomorrow.”
To earn scholarship funds for a Service Year, a Junior Firefighter must:
- Be an active member of Big Lakes County Fire Services.
- Reside in Big Lakes County during the Service Year.
- Complete a minimum of 48 hours of combined training, practices, maintenance and 10% of emergency response calls (where age-appropriate).
- Participate in department activities and/or community events as assigned.
- Remain in good standing with Big Lakes County Fire Services.
Big Lakes County Fire Services says the program is intended to strengthen the pathway from Junior Firefighter to future career firefighter, while also reducing financial barriers to post-secondary education.
