Big Lakes County is pleased to announce it will officially join the Rural Renewal Stream program through the Town of Slave Lake’s Rural Renewal Management Structure, at an annual cost of $10,000.

Originally introduced by the Government of Alberta in 2022 as part of the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program, the Rural Renewal Stream allows eligible workers to immigrate to Alberta as Provincial Nominees with formal endorsement from a participating municipality. With the support of this program, Big Lakes County will look to fill local labour gaps by endorsing employers and job seekers to fast-track immigration for eligible candidates.

In 2023, the Town of Slave Lake became a Designated Community under the Rural Renewal Stream and began offering administrative support to neighbouring municipalities. By joining through Slave Lake’s existing structure, Big Lakes County gains access to the benefits of the program without the need to administer it independently.

“Supporting our local businesses and ensuring they have access to a stable workforce is a top priority,” said Reeve Tyler Airth. “By joining the Rural Renewal Stream through the Town of Slave Lake, Big Lakes County is taking a meaningful step to help address ongoing labour shortages and promote long-term community growth.”

Employers across Big Lakes County have consistently cited challenges in attracting and retaining workers—a factor that directly impacts local business operations. This new partnership provides a sustainable and practical tool to help address these issues.
