Big Lakes County Council has approved $160,000 in funding to support the development and sustainability of childcare services in High Prairie and Kinuso. This investment reflects Council’s ongoing commitment to supporting families, strengthening communities, and addressing the growing demand for safe and reliable childcare across the region.
During the June 11, 2025 Regular Council Meeting, Council approved the following contributions:
- $85,000 to the Kinuso Childcare Society to support start-up costs for a new licensed childcare facility expected to open in Kinuso by September 2025.
- $75,000 to the Big Lakes Child Care Society to assist with the acquisition of the Safe Haven Day Care facility in High Prairie.
“Access to safe, affordable childcare is essential for the growth and well-being of our communities,” said Reeve Tyler Airth. “Council is proud to support these local childcare initiatives, which are being led by passionate, community-minded residents who are stepping up to meet an urgent need. These investments will help ensure families in both High Prairie and Kinuso have access to the support they need.”
Big Lakes Child Care Society
The Big Lakes Child Care Society, officially formed in May 2025 by a board of local parents, is working to acquire and operate the existing Safe Haven Day Care in High Prairie. The Society’s goal is to provide high-quality, licensed childcare while ensuring continuity of care for families currently using the facility. The $75,000 in County funding will support acquisition and operational expenses to help establish a strong, community-led childcare service. The Kinuso Childcare Society, formed in 2023 by a group of parents and soon-to-be parents, is launching a new childcare facility to meet the needs of local families. The Society has secured a location and plans to open its doors in fall 2025. The $85,000 in County funding will be used for licensing, equipment, facility modifications, and staff training—all essential for creating a safe, enriching space for children. The Kinuso Childcare Society is working toward a total fundraising goal of $195,000. The County’s investment will provide a significant boost toward making this important community project a reality.
