Big Lakes County is proud to announce its commitment of $74,730 toward the development of the Ken Sargeant House—a 21-bedroom facility near the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital that will provide affordable accommodations for families of a loved one receiving medical care in Grande Prairie.

The Ken Sargeant House is a key initiative aimed at reducing barriers to care and offering compassionate, community-focused support to rural and northern Alberta residents who must travel for treatment. “Our residents often have to travel long distances to access specialized medical care,” said Big Lakes County Reeve Tyler Airth. “Supporting the Ken Sargeant House is a meaningful way to ease that burden and keep families together during difficult times. This is about compassion, access, and ensuring our community members have the support they need when they need it most.”

In 2024, 64 Big Lakes County residents were admitted to the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital, with an average stay of 6.5 days—not including repeated outpatient visits, such as to the Cancer Centre. The financial commitment from the County is based on a $15 per capita contribution, using the County’s recorded population of 4,982 residents in 2024.

The Sod Turning Ceremony for the Ken Sargeant House was held on May 29 at 2:00 PM, officially launching construction at the site adjacent to the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital. The facility is expected to be completed by the fall of 2026.
