As Albertans head outdoors to enjoy trails and backcountry areas this summer, Alberta RCMP is reminding all off-highway vehicle (OHV) users to make safety their top priority.
Whether riding an ATV, side-by-side, dirt bike, or other OHV, taking simple precautions can help prevent serious injuries and save lives.
Before you ride:
- Always wear an approved helmet and appropriate protective gear.
- Ensure your OHV is in good working condition.
- Carry essential supplies, including water, a first aid kit, and a means of communication.
- Ride only on designated trails and respect local regulations.
- Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.
While riding:
- Never operate an OHV while impaired by alcohol, cannabis, or other drugs.
- Ride at a safe speed appropriate for trail and weather conditions.
- Stay alert for other trail users, wildlife, and changing terrain.
- Supervise young riders and ensure they are operating age-appropriate vehicles.
- Impaired driving laws apply to OHVs, and riders found operating while impaired may face criminal charges.
- As outdoor recreation increases during the summer months, Alberta RCMP encourages everyone to make responsible decisions and help keep trails safe for all users.
